Unique Community Hub - Creating an Inclusive Active Programme 2024

Updated: Apr 14

Founded by teachers who intimately understand the challenges faced by their local community, Unique Community Hub has blossomed into a thriving space that embodies inclusivity and representation. With a team that draws on a wealth of diverse experiences and expertise, the Hub is committed to creating a welcoming environment that serves the entire community.

How It All Started

The journey began on a voluntary basis, with a passionate group of individuals dedicated to building a space where children and young people could flourish through a range of social and physical activities. As the community's needs grew, so did the Hub’s ambition. Volunteers reached out to current and potential participants to better understand how the Hub could evolve to meet their expectations.

This community-driven approach paid off. With support from Active Calderdale, the Hub was able to secure funding that led to the creation of several paid roles, and much-needed infrastructure improvements. A new cycle track and state-of-the-art gym equipment soon followed, enabling the Hub to expand its offering and launch a six-day-a-week timetable. The schedule now caters to a broad spectrum of the community, including children, young people, individuals with disabilities, women, and older adults.

Strong Partnerships, Stronger Community

The success of the Unique Community Hub wouldn’t be possible without the support of numerous local organisations. These partners, such as Social Prescribing Services, Halifax Opportunities Trust, and Disability Partnership Calderdale, among others, play a vital role in connecting their members with the Hub. This collaboration has brought many first-time participants to the Hub, further broadening its impact.

In particular, the partnership with We're All Active Calderdale has been instrumental in coordinating efforts and ensuring the Hub continues to grow. Regular meetings have helped align the Hub's offerings with the needs of the wider community, making it a true collaborative effort.

Further funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund has allowed for the creation of a new 3G football pitch, further enhancing the Hub’s appeal and providing even more opportunities for local residents to get active.

The Impact

Since its official launch in May 2024, the Hub has welcomed around 250 participants. Many of these individuals had previously been classified as inactive and are now engaging in physical activities for the very first time.

The Hub’s inclusive and welcoming approach has opened doors for people of all ages and abilities, helping them discover new passions, improve their health, and feel more connected to their community.

Unique Community Hub stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision. With its roots in local knowledge and its heart in inclusivity, the Hub continues to make a meaningful difference to the lives of those it serves.
