Supporting our children and young people to stay active through COVID-19

Updated: Mar 27

Being active is one of the best things we can do for our physical and mental health, it helps us to be happier, healthier and it improves our concentration levels too! That’s why we’ve partnered with Healthy Futures Calderdale to create some simple, fun and free ways to keep children active.

Across England, we saw the re-opening of schools on the 8th March 2020. However, like any of us, there might be occasions where children and young people may be required to isolate should they develop symptoms of COVID-19 or be identified as a contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

When we need to isolate, it’s important to remember that there are still things we can do to improve our health and happiness – and being active is a perfect example.

We recognise that staying active at home during an isolation period can have its challenges, including being unable to exercise outside homes or in gardens. That’s why Active Calderdale and Healthy Futures Calderdale have worked together to produce this handy list of ideas and resources to help schools, parents and carers ensure their children continue to benefit from the many positive effects of keeping active. All activities included in this pack are free, there’s no specialist equipment required, and many can be modified to suit the needs of your child/children.

How can I access the active resources for my child?

Healthy Futures Calderdale are distributing this brand-new active pack to schools across the borough, to be shared with parents and carers of pupils who are isolating at home. However, this list of resources can be used by children and young people of any age, at any time.

The active resources are available to download here:

We encourage you to share this list with anyone else who you feel may benefit from this guide.

There's plenty more where that came from! Visit our 'Keeping active during COVID-19' page for more fun and practical ideas on how the whole family can stay active at home.
