Francis' Story
My name is Francis, and I live in Park Ward, Calderdale, with my wife and two children. Originally from Nigeria, I moved to the UK two years ago to build a better life for my family. While I’ve been working long hours in a physically demanding job, finding time and energy for exercise has been a challenge.
Growing up in Nigera, I was active, playing football and biking with friends. However, since relocating, I've struggled to prioritise fitness amidst work, family responsibilities, and the challenges of adapting to a new environment.
Several barriers made it difficult for me to stay active:
Affordability: Gym memberships and fitness classes can be expensive, forcing me to focus on bills and my children’s education.
Access to Facilities: In my area, safe parks and sports facilities are limited, and I often felt out of place in local fitness centers.
Time Constraints: Long shifts and family duties left little room for exercise, making the idea of working out feel overwhelming.
Isolation: Moving to a new country without a strong support network added to the difficulty of staying motivated.
However, everything changed when I joined the exercise programme at Light Up BAHC. This initiative has helped me break down those barriers and find the support I needed to get moving again.
Finding My Community Through Boxing
Joining the boxing sessions at Lightup BAHC has been a game-changer. Initially, I had reservations about participating, but the charity offered free or low-cost classes that welcomed everyone. From my first session, I felt encouraged by the instructors, who patiently taught me the basics. They ensured that participants of all fitness levels felt comfortable and motivated.
The sense of community has been incredible. I met others with similar stories and challenges, creating camaraderie that makes me eager to attend each week. We cheer each other on, celebrating every small victory together.
Convenient scheduling made it easier for me to participate after work, and the charity even arranged lifts with fellow attendees, helping me overcome transportation barriers. They provided essential boxing gear, removing the financial hurdle of purchasing equipment.
The Transformative Impact
Since joining Light Up BAHC, my life has transformed in ways I never expected. Boxing has not only improved my physical fitness—I feel stronger and more energetic—but it’s also enhanced my mental well-being. It’s a healthy outlet for stress, and I look forward to each session.
I feel more confident, with new fitness goals like improving my stamina and mastering advanced boxing techniques.
I’ve discovered that being active can be enjoyable and social, rather than just a chore.
Being more active has brought significant changes to my life:
Improved Health: I’ve noticed real improvements in my overall health, including lower blood pressure and weight loss, boosting my confidence.
Better Sleep: Since starting boxing, I sleep more soundly and wake up refreshed, positively impacting my energy and mood.
Ultimately, being active has made me feel healthier, happier, and more connected to my community.
I’m excited to maintain this momentum and explore more activities through Light Up BACH. The support I’ve received has been vital in helping me build a sustainable routine, and knowing I have a community behind me makes all the difference.
