Aisha's Story

My name is Aisha, and I live with my family in Halifax in a close-knit, multicultural community. While our community is vibrant and diverse, affordability can be a significant challenge, especially when it comes to accessing sports facilities and programs. For people from Black and African heritage backgrounds like myself, the cost of participating in physical activities can be limiting, and sometimes, recreational spaces lack cultural sensitivity and representation. This can make it challenging for individuals from diverse backgrounds to feel included and fully welcome.

Light Up Black and African Heritage Calderdale

Thankfully, initiatives like "Light Up Black and African Heritage Calderdale" are addressing these barriers. This organization is committed to promoting inclusivity, celebrating diversity, and creating accessible opportunities for everyone to engage in sports and recreation. Through community events, workshops, and partnerships with local organisations, the initiative provides access to sports facilities, fosters cultural understanding, and encourages active, healthy lifestyles. This initiative has made a real difference, helping individuals like me overcome obstacles and empowering us to embrace our heritage while enjoying physical activities.

How the Initiative Supports Me

The initiative has had a huge impact on my life, encouraging me to stay active through a range of culturally relevant fitness classes and events. For instance, classes that incorporate African and Caribbean dance, music, and traditions have made exercise enjoyable and meaningful. Additionally, the organization provides access to sports facilities and equipment, removing financial barriers and creating a more inclusive space. This sense of community, whether in group workouts, walking clubs, or boxing sessions, has been essential in motivating me to maintain an active lifestyle.

Benefits of Staying Active

Being active has brought a lot of positive changes to my life. Physical activity improves my physical health and significantly boosts my mental well being. Engaging in sports and exercise helps me reduce stress, lifts my mood, and increases my energy, giving me a valuable outlet for relaxation. Beyond this, participating in community events has strengthened my connections and sense of belonging. Meeting others with similar interests and backgrounds has allowed me to build friendships and find support.

Regular exercise has also positively impacted other areas of my life. I’ve noticed improvements in my focus, productivity, and creativity, which benefits both my work and personal growth. Achieving my fitness goals has boosted my confidence, empowering me to take on new challenges and pursue more opportunities.

Looking Ahead

I’m committed to continuing this journey with "Light Up Black and African Heritage Calderdale." The sense of belonging and empowerment I’ve gained fuels my dedication to prioritising my health and well being. With the ongoing support from this initiative, I feel confident that I can stay active and maintain a fulfilling, healthy lifestyle.
