Our “Meet & Move” campaign is all about finding ways to fit activity into everyday meetings and events. Eve’s story is a perfect example of how you can take a birthday (in this case a very special birthday) and turn it into a way for yourself and others to get active – and raise some money for a good cause too! Because when we move, we're stronger!
Eve’s Story
Eve is a resident at Lee Mount Nursing home, and for her 101st Birthday back in May, the staff and residents at Lee Mount wanted to celebrate in an active way! Together with Eve, they made a plan to walk 101 laps of nearby Shroggs park, to get active, and raise money for Overgate Hospice too!
Here's what Sherrie Highley, the Activities co-ordinator at Lee Mount, had to say:
Keeping everyone here at Lee Mount moving and active is so important to us, it brightens everyone’s mood and mental health, and keeps us all as mobile and healthy as possible.
Everyone who lives at Lee Mount absolutely loves getting outdoors, going for walks and taking in the sights, one lady often tells me she would much rather walk than get a bus or taxi and she is certain this has led to her having such good movement even as she has got older.
Our lady Eve has always wanted to give back to people and is always putting others before herself, so the idea came about to do a fundraiser alongside her birthday. So, doing the laps around Shroggs Park seemed like a great idea!
Our staff and residents have all contributed to the laps round Shroggs Park, those who were unable to walk have still contributed from a wheelchair and walking the parts they could safely manage.
Everyone really benefited from getting outdoors and doing the exercise, it lifted everyone’s mood, everyone was more relaxed afterwards. Many said they felt fulfilled, especially when they managed to walk further than they originally anticipated. It made us all feel more confident and boosted our self-esteem!
Eve, and everyone else who took part in the challenge were really excited to raise over £2000 for Overgate Hospice, which Eve said herself was a worthy cause!
